September 15th was chosen as the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month because it marks the anniversary of the independence of five Hispanic nations: Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Also, the independence of Mexico is celebrated on September 16th and that of Chile on September 18th.
